What is Super Duolingo?
Super Duolingo is Duolingo's premium subscription. It replaced Duolingo Plus in 2022,give the owl a futuristic makeover.

As you'd expect from a premium subscription, it opens the door to some fancy new features you don't get with the free version and gets rid of some pesky ones too.
That's pretty much all there is to it.
Is Super Duolingo the same as Duolingo Plus?
If you're familiar with Duolingo Plus, the previous iteration of Duolingo's premium service, then you might be wondering what the difference is.
For the most part, Super Duolingo and Duolingo Plus are identical.

All functions are exactly the same. The only difference is the name and the theme - Super Duolingo trades the spacey, galactic atmosphere of Plus for a more colourful, futuristic appearance.
How to get Super Duolingo
As of February 2023, Super Duolingo is available for most Duolingo users.
However, it appears that Duolingo is still offering Duolingo Plus in some regions.
Anyhow, the good news is that everyone will have the opportunity to upgrade to a premium membership. Most will get Super. But some can get plus.
Remember that the two memberships are exactly the same. They cost the same and you get the same features. They just look different and have different names. That's it.

Upgrading to Super Duolingo is really easy on mobile.

Other than that, the process is pretty much the same!
Go to your Duolingo home page, then click “Get Super”…

The cost of Super Duolingo depends on a few things such as:Where are you,how long you subscribe, Andwhether you choose an individual or family plan.

Why you might be reluctant to subscribe to Super Duolingo
In my case, I resisted subscribing to the premium membership for as long as I could.
As we just discussed, Duolingo is known for being a free way to learn languages. It is literally their mission to make language learning easier.free, fun and accessible to all.’
While billed as supporting free education, I couldn't see how a premium service would align with their mission.
It's not exactly cheap either. If you don't go for the family plan, it's pretty pricey, especially when you consider how solid a free membership already is.
That's ultimately why I've been on the fence for so long.
The free plan gives you access to full courses on a range of devices.Almost 40 languagesin your pocket or at your desk to study for free anytime, anywhere. It is without a doubt one of the best offers when it comes to language learning.
But as we all know, the owl is persuasive, so I finally gave in and subscribed.
And I have absolutely no regrets.
So you should accompany me to the land of Super?
To answer that, we need to consider a few things: the features and you.
What do you get with Super Duolingo?
As mentioned, Super Duolingo adds new features and removes others.
However, it doesn't offer as much as it used to. Compared to what Duolingo Plus offered back then, the offerings are noticeably thinner.
Super Duolingo now includes:
- Unlimited hearts
- Unlimitedlegendary levelTry
- Unlimitedtimed challengeTry
- Complete access to thePractice center/personalized practice
- Monthly strip repair
- Super DuolingoApp-Symbol
Super Duolingo also removes ads.
It's also important to note that Duolingo has a habit of introducing new features every now and then, some of which are exclusive to Super members.
Usually these come before Android to IOS.
However, aside from the app icon, all of the features listed above are available on both operating systems.
Why you should consider a subscription
So, do these advantages justify choosing Super Duolingo?
To answer this, I've broken it down into three areas that will affect your experience. This should help you better understand how these features stack up in context.
Less punitive
Let's start with what I consider to be the biggest advantage of Super Duolingo.
As great as the free membership is, something that really grinds my gears on mobile is theHerzsystem.
Duolingo claims it's designed to do thatAccelerate lessons to balance practice and new material.
But what it really does is punish you for mistakes. If you get too many questions wrong, you will temporarily lose your license to learn your language.
This is problematic because making mistakes is an essential part of language learning. Exposure, repetition and immersion - these are non-negotiable requirements on the way to fluency. The heart system sets up roadblocks that can eventually make you turn back.
Super Duolingo clears the way with unlimited hearts.

Don't worry about making mistakes anymore.
Stop avoiding the tough lessons for fear of losing your license to learn.
With Super you can devote yourself fully to learning your language. You can move your way and split yoursXP, as much or as little as you want.
For me, that was the big game changer. Sure, I could always watch an ad, do an exercise, or squander gems to refill my heart.
But these are distractions. I just want to learn a language and not watch ads from utilities I'm not interested in!
Note that hearts are only available on mobile devices. So if you only use the desktop version, you won't really feel this benefit.
More comfortable
Let's face it: Duolingo's free membership comes in handy. But Super takes it to a new level.
It eliminates ads and paves the way for smoother and faster transitions between classes.
Getting rid of the hearts is also super convenient. No more waiting 5 hours for a heart refill. With Super, you can immerse yourself in your language anytime, anywhere.
Individually, these perks don't seem like much. But together they make a significant difference to the flow and feel of your classes.
supportive
The free membership is already very supportive; After all, where would we be without Duo's daily encouragement!
But with Super, the owl is extra determined to lead you to success in language learning.
Granted, some of the premium features are a bit pointless.
If you're on the fence, I doubt a new app icon will convince you to sign up!
But some of the features are really useful.
Thepractice center(or Personalized Practice, as it's more commonly known now) is one of the features I use the most. It lets you repeat questions you got wrong in previous lessons and challenges you with some challenges you may not have encountered yet.
It even breaks it down into listening and speaking exercises so you can get super specific with your practice sessions.

Super Duolingo also puts you at the front of the queue for future new features, although that seems to have slowed down recently.
Things like Practice Hub and Pronunciation Check (which Duolingo removed for some reason...) were both released to super subscribers first.
This isn't always the case - they've been known to test new features with free users too - but generally the juicier features are rolled out to super members first.
Because of this, I describe Super Duolingo as more supportive. It removes the punitive nature of the heart system and creates an environment in which making mistakes - and the ability to practice them - is actively encouraged.
How to cancel Super Duolingo
If you decide to try Super Duolingo but then decide it's not for you, rest assured that you can cancel at any time!

How to get Super Duolingo for free
Did you know that it is actually possible to get Super Duolingo for free?!
At least for a limited time.
As far as I'm aware there are currently three ways you can do this:
1. Join Duolingo's 14-day free trial
Everyone should have access to a 14-day free trial of Super Duolingo.
The easiest way to do this is to tap on one of the super features (e.g. unlimited hearts, practice center). You will then get the Super Duolingo upgrade screen where it should beTRY IT FOR $0.00.

Tap on it, sign in and your 14-day free trial will start immediately.
2. Watch out for promo codes
Another great way to get Super Duolingo for free is to keep an eye out for Super Promo Codes.
From time to time, Duolingo will release new codes that allow you to get a Super Duolingo subscription for free.
For example, back in September 2022, Duolingo offered a huge 30-day free trial of Super Duolingo with the promo codeDRACARYS.

However, remember that promo codes usually require you to enter payment details as well. However, as long as you cancel before the 30 days are up, you will not be charged.
3. Lengthen your streak
Prolonging your streak not only gets you some cool treats from thestrip society. You'll also get some free trials of Super Duolingo!
These attempts are usually much shorter than the ones above and usually last no more than 3 days at a time.
They are also somewhat more random and sporadic. I have seen users get these free trials after 7 days, 50 days, 100 days and 150 days.
over to you
Now for the big one. The most important. We looked at the features. Now we have to thinkOf.
Why is that the big one? Because deciding whether Super Duolingo justifies the price is a very personal decision. It all boils down to your priorities, goals and circumstances. From this side of the screen I can never know what that is. I can only present the facts and share my experiences.
It's also important to be aware of what Super Duolingo can do for you. Although it is a premium service, you will not be fluent in your target language with Super. At least not by itself.
That's becauseLearning a language requires a balanced diet of study and application. You can't limit yourself to just one thing.
In my case, Duolingo has a strong presence.
But I also useNordVPNAccess to thousands of TV shows and movies in my target languages;
LingQto work on my reading and listening;
Benny Lewisspeech hackingBooks – available inFrench,Spanish,DeutschAndItalian— to work on my speaking;
AndHelloTalkto practice my messaging.
Super Duolingo just improves that one part of my diet. It's not an all-in-one superfood that meets all of my language needs.
So, is Super Duolingo worth it?
As unhelpful as that may sound, only you can decide.
In my case, I think Super Duolingo is worth it.
Since I use it so often (about 10-30 minutes every day) it makes about £0.16 a day over the year. To me, that's pretty good value for money as it means I can ditch the heart system and ads and take advantage of the super-only features.
That being said, Super Duolingo isn't as good as it used to be. Duolingo appears to have removed a number of features -- like offline lessons and championship quizzes -- and not really added new ones, but the pricing has stayed the same.
While I still get the features that matter most to me, it doesn't seem as cheap as it used to be.
But everyone is different here too. So here are my recommendations:
Stick with the free membership if…
- You are just beginning your language learning journey
- You are not willing to make a long-term commitment to Duolingo or your target language
- You prefer to spend your money on other resources
- You want to reduce expenses
- You are satisfied with the free membership (e.g. do not interfere with the heart system, advertising, etc.)
- They mainly use the desktop version of Duolingo
Consider subscribing to Super Duolingo if…
- You've been using Duolingo for a while
- You use Duolingo every day (and have been for at least 30 days)
- They are frustrated with the heart system, advertising, etc
- You want the extra features
- You are in a position where you can justify it financially
If you're still undecided about Super Duolingo...
If you're still undecided, I highly recommend you take advantage of Super Duolingo's free trial. Duolingo usually offers them on a 14-day basis, which I think is plenty of time to get a feel for the service and make an informed decision about whether it's worth signing up.
If 14 days isn't enough, or free trials aren't offered, it might be worth subscribing for a month to give yourself a little extra time to figure out if this is the right membership for you.
Have your say!
So what do you think of Super Duolingo after all this?
Is it something you can subscribe to yourself, or are you satisfied with the free membership?
Do you prefer it over Plus?
